Weight of Gold

Ancient lullabies sung at night
Tell us of tales in search of lights
Maps and treasures filled with gold
For those who venture the unknown
Who dare dig up the lonely earth
In hopes the future holds its worth?
The weight of gold
Might be too heavy to hold

But these songs sound so enticing
And the way it shines is so inviting
A siren’s song leads sailors to tombs
It sparkles and shines and grabs you too
Lead by your eyes blinding your mind
Blocks out your heart leaving you blind
But you don’t see the irony here
The gold you seek is never near

Oh the things you’ll do to hold it close
Oh the things you’ve done no one knows
But let’s pretend we know your secrets
And all you said to us to try and keep it
These pictures you paint aren’t as they seem
And the hands you’ve used aren’t as clean
The weight of gold
Seems too heavy to hold

You see me here with empty hands
A freedom you may never understand
You pity my lack of treasured gifts
But clench that gold around your wrists
I use two hands to climb and feel free
Your hands are bound at 90 degrees
But you don’t see the irony here
The gold you seek is never near

You can dig and dig but it’ll never be enough
Not compared to all you’ve lost
Time is spent looking at the ground
While it’s tying us up and weighing us down
Reclaim your life and look it in the eyes
The most expensive things don’t have a price
When the weight of gold
Is too heavy to hold

Love Always,
Lainey
