Changing Skies

How many times did the sun come back?
Sunrises and sunsets came and went
How many do we have left?
How many prayers have we sent
To keep us together?

I’ve watched the colors of the sky change
I’ve watched your eyes change with the moon
Death gripping each moment
And it’s gone too soon

It’s a blessing and a curse to live so well
Trapped in hell as these fires rise
Everything we know keeps changing
Pulled into the tide we ride

We seek comfort in familiar things
Wish for strength to weather the storm
Hope and pray, cry and scream
But change makes us transform

Does the night sky show us its scars?
Beams of light from each dying star
Speaks to us in blinks of an eye
You sleep, but sleep is hard

The dawn will come and bathe us in light
Trapped between lucid dreams and reality
We keep the stars in our wounds
They heal us from the inside out as we see...
Love means there’s no finality

Love Always,
Lainey

Golden Hour

Break the chains that kept you
Played it safe for too long
They claimed to know you better
Knew every letter but not your name

Held tight to the ropes we walked on
Stumbling and not looking down
Burning beneath our feet
Don’t know defeat as we meet the dawn

No one knows the fires we walked through
To get to where we are
Empty shells and bulletproof
The stars above refuse to move
Like we do

Fall into the light
When the dark swallowed you whole
Face the dark with the sun at your back
Reclaim
Rename
Your soul

Recognize those eyes
You’re not a stranger anymore
The setting sun calls to you
In waves
These days
There’s more

Losing light as the golden hour comes
Unraveled, undone as gold turns to night
But the stars they shine
And speak through your eyes

Held tight to the ropes we walked on
Stumbling and not looking down
Burning beneath our feet
Don’t know defeat as we meet the dawn

Love Always,
Lainey

Crooked Crown

There’s a depth in your eyes
Where you broke
And let in the light

Drown in the dark
Swallow the hollows of their words
They mean well
But you can’t be heard

Years are just years
Time is a lie
Don’t blame their fear
They don’t know what it’s like

Can you trust the ground you walk on?
Or your hands to pull you up?
No one’s wrong
When their versions of love have changed

Change is constant
Ask the ones who named
Each constellation
 Maps were never the same

Our souls can’t lie
Or hide the truth
No matter how hard we try
Win or lose

So where will we end up?
Will we rise or drown?
Embrace this new love
And wear a crooked crown

Love Always,
Lainey

Recurring Dreams

There’s a light
Hiding in the night
Weaves between the blinds to your eyes
In our forsaken paradise

I see the look of fear
It’s so clear
Fighting the fantasy we have here
So far but so near

Awake from the dream
You’ve had about eighteen hundred times
Wondering, what tomorrow brings?
But can’t see past these vertical lines
These black and white stripes you’re imagining

Why do you give in?
Living in sin
Hiding the fire under your skin
Whenever you’re with him

Awake from the dream
Recurring scenes
Fabricated truth beyond what it seems
Just tell me what you mean

I gaze in your eyes
Just like old times
The memories drift across the sky
In our forsaken paradise

Love Always,
Lainey

Later

I’ve stopped looking for the signs
If it doesn’t sit right find another seat
Maybe it’s just me but I’ve rolled up my sleeves
My hearts’ not for you to see
and I’m not apologizing

It’s not my fault you can’t sleep
Your haunted dreams don’t cross mine
Maybe it’s just me but I feel wild and free
Keep your greed
I see you turning green

Count all the things you have
And it’s still not enough
You’ve got it so rough with that fake laugh
Desperately trying to cover it up
Stay off my path

I’ve learned to spot the red flags
I don’t mean to brag but I feel smarter now
Dont worry about me I’m allowed
Your opinions are such a drag
Leave them in a bag and smoke them later

Love Always,
Lainey

Ancient Wars

Break these deadbolts off the frame
Save this fortress from the damned
Rose quartz bones make us insane
Ash from flames paint us glam
And... You'd never know

Dust settles with the sun rise
Another great day for war
When light lives the shadow dies
Throw it out and hit the floor
And... Watch the sky glow

This one-sided war left burns
Flash forward
And a few wrong turns
Predator and prey are one and the same
Curse and pray despite restraint
And breathe out my name

I should go
Give up control
Talk to my soul like you've known it before
Ground me and these shallow roots
Fix this broken parachute
Drown in these eyes and find yours
Yeah, you've known it before

Once upon a lifetime
I was told of an ancient prayer
Truth bleeds between the lies
Sacred magic drifting through the air
And... You'd never know

Which life was your crime?
Your innocence proves, not this one
But you're paying the price
I forgive you, let karma be done
And... Watch the sky glow

Don't be fooled
No one's excluded
Take your bulletproof light
And pick a side

This one-sided war left burns
Flash forward
And a few wrong turns
Predator and prey are one and the same
Curse and pray despite restraint
And breathe out my name
breathe out my name

Love Always,
Lainey

Alibi for Goodbye

Light a candle
say a prayer
wings will take you higher
as high as you cared
such a fine line
bask in the light
don't get caught in the fire

there's a point past pain
when all that remains went away
in two places at once
 bury it with a laugh
an optimistic attack of white lies
an alibi for goodbye...
when goodbye is a crime

Read my face
I can't hide my thoughts
or is it what I want you to see?
looks like they all forgot
just as I suspected
hope to be neglected
another slate wiped clean

there's a point past pain
when all that remains went away
in two places at once
 bury it with a laugh
an optimistic attack of white lies
an alibi for goodbye...
when goodbye is a crime

can't function head on
so I pretend you're still here
 when the storm's this calm
maybe it's a dream this time
 another alibi for goodbye

bury it with a laugh
an optimistic attack of white lies
a lullaby of alibis
lullaby
lullaby

an alibi
alibi
 for goodbye...

Love Always,
Lainey

Nashville

There’s a history beneath the skyline
Of downtown city lights
It’s like I’m walking in her footsteps
And I’ve traveled back in time

I could hear her laugh a mile away
And see her eyes light up the sky
She was happy and carefree
And didn’t know love was so close by

Flash forward I’m standing where she stood
As her voice echoes in the streets
A new place I’ve never been before
But there’s a sense of familiarity

Walk past my reflection in a window
And I see her standing in my place
I put my hand up to the glass
And I’m looking at her face

We follow music notes down Broadway
Drinking whiskey and moonshine
Talking and laughing with everyone
Like somehow frozen in time

The night was clear the stars were out
We brought the California weather
Caught up in the moment and then I blinked
And found a single white feather

One place connecting two worlds
The city of music speaks in many ways
There’s such a strong connection here
Like we’re on the same page

Like mother like daughter time is infinite
There’s no distance in time and space
Following a trail of feathers
Of her footsteps in this place

Mesmerized by the city’s vibes
Though the bright lights and busy streets
In the midst of the competing bands
I know she’s right here with me

Love always,
Lainey

Home in the Shadow

for a second
I studied your eyes
that's how you got me
we were exposed
truth lies behind your skies
you taught me how to see

walk past the signs
that hit us in the face
this world is way too small
taste the oceans
left without a trace
why can't we have it all?

we don't need their eyes
 undressing our flaws
we're running out of time
as they conceal their claws
pretend to believe their lies
with our smiles and nods

it'll buy us time
they can't afford to keep
truth is coming

moonbeams find us
in the middle of the road
there's comfort in the night
don't be afraid
find a home in the shadow
where they can't take our light
…they can't take our light

Love Always,
Lainey

Phoenix

There used to be a story
that brought you to life
and through all the complications
the stars perfectly aligned

then the sky would get dark again
there'd be another storm to pass
and all the times you felt like giving up
you still see the beauty life has

then grief forced you strong
you're given credit like it's a choice
and all the times you want to scream out loud
you suddenly lose your voice

time now makes no sense
is it a circle or straight line?
or does it go up and down
like the heartbeats left behind?

but dreams exist to give us hope
and remind us of lessons learned
and through all the ash and soot from this
we still rise up from these burns

exhale and let the story shift
there's no limit to change
let the phoenix rise above these flames
let the stars rearrange

there's one thing that doesn't fail
and it grows stronger each year
the love we share is infinite
the fire singed away the fear

and this story that brought you back to life
will be sung in songs and written down
and told by all who know it too
of how to earn a crooked crown

there will always be beauty
there will always be you
rise through love and flames, my love
and life begins to feel brand new

Love Always,
Lainey
